Opportunities for the future

Posted

Seniors at Marshfield High School received a pleasant surprise during their lunch period on Oct. 24.

The seniors attended a brief ceremony telling them about their college opportunities through a program known as Vu Scholarships. Thanks to a grant from the Marshfield Area Community Foundation and the generosity of the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce, the school was able to introduce the scholarship program.

Each senior was presented with a letter which had a QR code. Once the code was scanned, it would take seniors to the Vu site, which showed them colleges and potential scholarships they would qualify for based on their current GPA and demographic data. In total, the class of 2024 was presented with $130,180,230 in scholarship opportunities.

“This is crazy,” said Senior Joey Tackett. “It is really insane how much money everyone could get. Two of my friends have over a million dollars in offers. I have over a million, and a few others I know have at least half.” Many seniors echoed his thoughts; Tackett plans to attend Southern Baptist University and get a degree in ministry.

Seniors were not the only ones who received fantastic news; in their homeroom classes, juniors received a Vu letter, and a total of $118,482,222 in scholarship opportunities were presented to the class of 2025.

“I had been visiting with the representatives of the Marshfield Community Foundation, and when I shared the news there might be some grant money available, Mr. Jeff Curly knew immediately what to apply for,” shared Mike Henry, Superintendent of the Marshfield R-1 School District. “We then went out with the high school counseling team involved, which turned out great. So many of these students do not realize what scholarships they qualify for, now while they can not take advantage of all the scholarships I believe it is really valuable to see that hard work is paying off and give our students a recognition of the opportunities available to them. I think it is pretty powerful.”

The hope is to continue the Vu Scholarship opportunities for years to come.
